How to stay cool without showing your legs
It has been unusually warm in San Francisco this week, and I was chatting with a customer about it. She said, "Sarah, I really want to be able to stay cool in this heat, but I HATE showing my legs. It just makes me feel uncomfortable - do you have any tips??"
I totally get it - whether your knees have started sagging a little with age, you don't want to shave your legs, or, like me, your legs are such a reflective pale white from being covered all year that you're afraid of blinding people, sometimes you don't want to show your legs.
It's hot out, though, so what's a person to do? Well, I have a few tips on how to stay cool without showing those gams.
1. Maxi or Midi dresses - Maxi and midi length dresses are a great way to stay cool when it's hot out, just make sure they are made out of a breathable fabric so as not to create a sauna for your legs. Breathable fabrics include linen, cotton, silk, and rayon and bamboo. Pair a maxi dress with sandals for a summer BBQ. Pair a midi dress with a linen blazer and wedges for a work-appropriate look.
2. Cropped, wide leg pants - Cropped wide leg pants in a breathable fabric are a great option for staying cool in the summer heat. Exposing a little ankle will be helpful for keeping cool and a wide leg silhouette allows more air circulation than slimmer styles, which will also keep you cooler. Pair with a cotton sweater and lightweight scarf for work or a striped T-shirt on the weekends. Want some tips on shoes? Check out this blog post about what shoes to wear with cropped pants.
3. Jumpsuits - You all know I LOVE jumpsuits - they are a great way to stay cool and still wear pants. Again, it's all about breathable fabrics! Sleeveless will keep you much cooler, but if you don't like your arms, be sure to wear a short sleeve or 3/4 sleeve jumpsuit to keep the look cool and seasonally appropriate. Pair with sandals or sneakers on the weekend and with oxfords and a blazer for work.
